How it Works When primary pump fails, water rises above normal and lifts the basepump float Transfer tube activates the basepump ejector and municipal water rushes through it, creating suction. Acting like a giant soda straw, water draws up from the sump and ejects to the outdoors Basepump runs for about a minute after the float returns to normal position to clear most sump water out before stopping.
